Jackalope Theatre Company announces The New Frontier Series of commissioned and developing plays in lieu of live productions. Read up a digital Living Newspapers Series, and the completion of the company’s Artistic Director transition from Gus Menary to Kaiser Ahmed.
Jackalope maintains its cultural partnership with the Chicago Park District’s Art Partners In Residence Program and plans to return to their venue in The Broadway Armory in Fall 2020, which has been occupied by the Department of Family Services as a shelter since April 2020. In response to Chicago’s reopening guidelines for theaters and for the safety of its artists and patrons, Jackalope has decided to postpone productions in their Armory space until the 2021/2022 Season.
For this upcoming 2020/2021 Season, Jackalope has commissioned new plays to be written by Terry Guest, Daria Miyeko Marinelli, Abbas Omer Salem and Calamity West for an expansive and digitally shared development process. The New Frontier Series will spotlight the playwright’s process through interactive and public dramaturgical engagement opportunities such as panel discussions, interviews, table readings, and other digital content culminating in a limited run workshop of each play in April and May of 2021. Look out for an announcement in late-August 2020 for dates, play titles, synopses, and directors.
This year, Jackalope adapts the company’s long-running one-act play festival into the digital realm. This series will feature six new 10-minute plays, as before, but now digitally presented as filmed solo pieces written and performed by Chicago’s best and most exciting upcoming talent. These filmed short plays will be scheduled in their release, with three presented in the fall and three in the spring, each piece responding to a recent news article.
